Antoine apparently never benefited from the services a professional translator has to offer. In order to eliminate potential sources of misunderstanding it is important always to bear in mind the intentions of the original writer. Written text has a purpose, and an effective translation achieves this purpose.

Therefore a translator must be familiar with the cultural and country–specific characteristics of his and her working languages, and be prepared to accept the challenges different texts may pose.

For instance, legal texts demand precision and a sound knowledge of the legal system they are intended for, whereas literary texts invite the translator to be creative.
